JOAN's first-ever custom room scent by perfumer and artist Julianne Lee is inspired by the fleeting moments one experiences in Los Angeles, driving on the freeways as the sun is setting, then rising, accompanied by the lights of the city. The fragrance’s watercolor quality contrasts with the urban grit of downtown, much like how Lee experienced JOAN as an ever-changing art space with a feminist ethos. These moments of stillness, framed by concrete walls in the Santee Alley neighborhood, are mirrored in the scent’s ability to evoke memory. The name afterimage is a fitting metaphor for something that imprints itself and lingers long after.
