Field Trip

Beach Field Trip

August 10, 2025

Join us on Sunday, August 10 at 8:30pm, for a special field trip co-organized together with David Horvitz’s survey exhibition being living, now on view through August 23.

We’ll take a night walk along the shores of Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro to observe the grunion run, a rare natural phenomenon occurring from 10:35pm to 12:35am. From March through September, these silvery fish ride the waves onto the shore to spawn and complete their life cycle. Female grunion burrow into the wet sand to release new life, followed closely by the males who fertilize it in place. Driven by the lunar cycle, this spectacular event has captivated Southern Californians for over a century.

If you’d like to join us, meet at Eddy’s Tacos Oaxaca at 8:30pm to grab a bite before we head to the beach together.

David Horvitz was born in Los Angeles, where he currently lives and works. His multidisciplinary practice explores systems of language, time, and networks, often questioning the distances—geographical, temporal, and interpersonal—that separate people and places. Working with images, text, and objects, his projects move fluidly across contexts, frequently inhabiting the intimate and everyday.
